Today’s revolutions in cloud computing, open-source software, open data, and artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) are collectively transforming how society shares and utilizes information. The potential for these technologies to benefit water resource management and environmental stewardship is clear yet elusive. Federal agencies have articulated a critical need to modernize and unify environmental data and modeling software into a world-class, open-source, fully-coupled Earth Modeling System that provides end-to-end data assimilation, multi-domain modeling, and real-time analysis for decision support (e.g., 2024 NOAA Modeling Strategy). Municipalities and corporations are interested in increasingly comprehensive analyses of the cumulative impacts of their environmental conservation and stewardship projects on long-term water availability, water quality, greenhouse gases, and biodiversity.

A critical challenge across the water resources industry is having staff with sufficient cross-training in software development AND geospatial environmental data analysis and modeling to support these analyses.
