Water Stewardship

Demands on water resources are growing rapidly, creating concerns about water availability and quality and potential impacts on society, industry, and ecosystem health. Stewardship of water resources means understanding water use and associated risks due to water scarcity and pollution and taking action to help ensure that water is managed sustainably as a shared resource. LimnoTech helps corporate clients understand their water use and evaluate associated impacts and risks. We also support the development of science-based response strategies, facilitate partnerships to successfully implement impactful stewardship actions, and quantify the multi-benefits of those actions.

LimnoTech has a specialized service area focused on corporate water stewardship. We work with companies to better understand their water footprint and associated risks in operations and throughout their supply chains. We help companies develop water strategies and set goals to work “outside the fence line” in collaboration with non-governmental organization (NGO) partners and local stakeholders.

An important focus of our work is the quantification of water benefits resulting from water stewardship investments. In collaboration with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and in support of The Coca-Cola Company’s 2007 replenish commitment, LimnoTech developed the core concepts and calculation methods for volumetric water (‘replenish’) benefits and published them in the peer review literature. Over the past 15 years, we have applied the methods to hundreds of projects around the world for dozens of companies and NGO partners. In 2019, we collaborated with the World Resources Institute (WRI) to integrate the methods into a working paper on Volumetric Water Benefit Accounting.

LimnoTech is currently engaged in several exciting initiatives that are advancing deeper engagement in corporate water stewardship. We served as advisors on the Guide to Setting Site Water Targets Informed by Catchment Context, and we are currently collaborating with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to develop a Methodology to Set Science-based Targets for Freshwater. LimnoTech is a core member of a team advancing Benefit Accounting of Nature-Based Solutions for Watersheds, a separate WRI-led initiative addressing Water Quality Benefit Accounting, and a CEO Water Mandate-led effort focused on the Co-Benefits of WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) Accounting. The LimnoTech team is Professionally Credentialed for the AWS Standard and provides consulting support for organizations looking to initiate, develop and share their water stewardship journey through the implementation of the AWS Standard.

LimnoTech supports companies across the arc of a corporate water stewardship journey – from developing water stewardship strategies and targets, through the implementation of actions and, finally, with disclosure and storytelling of success.
