Increasingly, the monitoring and management of these resources require the use of environmental monitoring tools that can sense water quality, detect changing or hazardous conditions, and support the observation and protection of aquatic ecology. In 2011, LimnoTech worked closely with Michigan-based suppliers, academics, and the University of Michigan to develop an environmental sensing buoy platform specifically designed for the Great Lakes coastal environment. This led to the deployment of the first privately funded, real-time weather buoy in the Great Lakes, serving a nuclear power plant in Lake Michigan.
Since installing the first buoy, we have continued to refine the buoy configuration and expanded our monitoring to include a variety of systems. We work collaboratively with our clients to design, develop, build, and deploy environmental sensing networks that provide high-quality real-time environmental data. We’ve worked with numerous universities, agencies, utilities, and private sector companies to deploy and maintain real-time sensors.
In 2022, LimnoTech launched Freeboard Technology, a new environmental technology company that addresses the need for smart, innovative, and connected sensing systems for our nation’s lakes, rivers, and coastal waters. Freeboard Technology complements LimnoTech’s environmental consulting expertise by bringing new water technologies to market, driving down production costs, providing connectivity, and building smart decision sensor dashboards and analytics tools.
