World Water Week 2025 – Water for Climate Action

August 20, 2025

World Water Week (WWW) is the leading conference on global water issues, where experts come together to collaborate and share their ideas, experiences, and learnings. The water conference will take place in Stockholm, Sweden, and virtually from Sunday, August 24, through Thursday, August 28. The Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) hosts World Water Week each year to bring together organizations from all sectors and regions to find solutions to the world’s most significant water-related challenges.

Laura Weintraub, Penelope Moskus, and Steve Skripnik, experts and leaders from LimnoTech’s water stewardship team, look forward to participating, presenting, and serving as panelists and facilitators. Join the session and side event where Penelope and Laura will share their knowledge and experience with the listed speakers, conveners, and panelists.

Taking action with freshwater science-based targets for business resilience

Date/Time: Thursday, August 28, 11:00-12:30 CEST (5:00-6:30 am EDT)

Location: Online & On-site C3, Level 2 (Session ID 12322)

About: This session will showcase how companies are taking action on freshwater through science-based targets. Science Based Targets Network experts will highlight the connection between science-based targets for nature and climate action, while companies will share insights from their freshwater stewardship journey, including investments in biodiversity, water security, and resilient ecosystems.

Session Hosts: Klaudia Schachtschneider (Pacific Institute), Naabia Ofosu-Amaah (The Nature Conservancy), Angela Bowman (World Wildlife Fund US), Allen Townsend (World Wildlife Fund US), Katharina Wache (World Resources Institute), Cesar Siefert (Conservation International), Maria Isabel Cruz Gutierrez (CDP), and Penelope Moskus (LimnoTech).

Convenors: CDP Worldwide, Conservation International, Science Based Targets Network, The CEO Water Mandate, The Nature Conservancy, World Resources Institute, World Wide Fund for Nature, and Walton Family Foundation.

Session Description: More and more people are experiencing the climate crisis through water. Extreme floods, droughts, and decreasing groundwater levels are impacting communities, economies, and ecosystems globally. Solutions in freshwater systems offer natural defenses against these impacts, providing critical buffers for communities, cities, and businesses.

This session will showcase how companies can take robust and credible action on freshwater challenges through science-based targets for nature to strengthen their climate resilience. As the climate and nature crises intensify, companies need to work together to build resilience in river basins, safeguard their value chains and operations, and also support local communities.

The session will cover:

  • Overview of SBTN’s latest updates and enabling resources to help companies take action
  • A focus on SBTN’s implementation guidance and the case for investing in freshwater response options, highlighting synergies such as biodiversity restoration, water security, and reduced risk of maladaptation.
  • Firsthand insights from companies implementing freshwater science-based targets and their journey towards responsible water stewardship.

The session will showcase how nature and climate action can go hand in hand for companies through science-based targets for nature. It will also emphasize the importance of partnerships with local communities, governments, and NGOs to deliver resilient solutions.

From Drops to Diversity: Accounting for Biodiversity Benefits in Corporate Water Stewardship

Date/Time: Tuesday, August 26, 4:15-5:15 CEST (10:15-11:15 am EDT)

Location: SIDE EVENT – CONVENDUM (VASAGATAN 16, STOCKHOLM)

About: Water and biodiversity are closely linked, but corporate water strategies often overlook biodiversity co-benefits. This session introduces Biodiversity Benefit Accounting (BioBA), a new framework helping businesses integrate biodiversity into water stewardship efforts through standardized metrics and credible reporting. Hear from experts on how BioBA supports disclosure, investment, and ecosystem resilience, with insights from early pilot applications.

Panelists: Paulina Concha Larrauri (Microsoft), Lauren Maul (Ducks Unlimited), and Ben Wilinsky (Arbor Day Foundation).

Convenors: Pacific Institute (Gregg Brill), LimnoTech (Laura Weintraub), and The Nature Conservancy (Naabia Ofosu-Amaah).

The World Water Week 2025 theme is ” Water for Climate Action,” where “Any action taken to safeguard natural processes underpinned by water is, by extension, an action to protect the climate and safeguard biodiversity and ecosystems.” SIWI has noted that the week is “shaped by hundreds of convening organizations, driving positive change in a collaborative effort through capacity building and knowledge sharing.” Our LimnoTech team looks forward to continuing discussions and taking bold actions with our partners and collaborators to tackle these water and climate challenges.
